Every May I usually get an early start with my hummingbirds. In the beginning I don’t put much out at a time until the hummingbirds start showing up.
This year I was late getting it out and I actually spotted a hummingbird show up at my regular feeder and I knew I needed to get on the ball. I ended up buying a second feeder this year planning to have an extra one so that I could just rotate them, but that quickly changed. I had one hummingbird that wanted to guard the feeder and not share so I had to put my second feeder out too.
I love feeding and watching the hummingbirds but the food you buy in the store can be so expensive. So I thought I’d share with you the recipe I’ve been using for hummingbird food for the last several years. It’s super simple.
4 parts water
1 part sugar
Optional: red food coloring
Bring the water and sugar to a boil, stirring to melt the sugar. I add just a drop of food coloring. It makes it easier to see from my kitchen window what the level is, in the feeder.
4 cups water / 1 cup sugar is enough to fill up both of my feeders with just a little left over.
